KEEPING UP WITH KENZ
How Safe is Safe Enough?
According Keith Labelle, the director of violence prevention and advocacy services, URI is not more or less safe than any other school. However, the university is providing services that other schools are not. When a crime does occur, the university does not try to hide it and takes care of it quickly. The resident assistants and other support staff are well trained and know what to do when a crime occurs.
Keith Labelle believes that the number of crime is high because of the great violence prevention program in place here. Although the numbers are high, there are still many cases that go unreported to the university police and judicial affairs. Keith Labelle is also the director of the Peer Advocacy program at URI. The peer advocates comes from all walks of life which enables them to reach a large number of students to spread awareness on crimes against women.
The university is doing their part to assure students are safe but students can do their part as well.. If students step in with another student needs help, we can make the URI campus a safer place. Students should take advantage of all the services provided by the university and use the buddy system instead of walking alone around campus at night.
